On Tuesday, Seattle announced seven official hires to Coach Mike Macdonald’s 2024 staff. Here are four things to know about the Seahawks' new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.
Pass Attack: Moving the Ball
New Seahawks' offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb spent the past two seasons as the University of Washington's offensive coordinator. The Huskies quickly become one of the most-prolific passing offenses in the country. In 2022, Grubb's offense ranked first in the nation in passing yards per game (369.8), and second in total yards per game (515.8).
In 2023, the 14-1 Huskies again ranked second of all FBS programs in passing yards per contest (343.7) and 12th in total offense (462.1).
Iowa Hog Farmer To NFL
One of 32 offensive coordinators in the NFL, Grubb now holds one of the most coveted jobs in football coaching. But despite an impressive climb through the college coaching ranks, it wasn't an easy rise to the top, and prior to getting his first full-time coaching gig, Grubb got into the family business of hog farming in 1999, juggling that job with high school and college jobs before leaving the family business behind in 2007 when he joined Kalen DeBoer at Sioux Falls.
"I grew up on a farm," Grubb told the Seattle Times last year. "My dad grew up on a farm. His dad grew up on a farm, et cetera, et cetera."
Starting Fresh
Grubb began his collegiate coaching career at South Dakota State in 2005 as running backs coach. After being moved to wide receivers coach in 2006, Grubb joined the University of Sioux Falls as run game coordinator and offensive line coach under Kalen DeBoer. The pair would work together from 2007-2013 to help bring the Cougars two NAIA championships, as Grubb was elevated to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2010.
DeBoer would take his talents up to the FBS level as head coach of Eastern Michigan University in 2014, where Grubb would join him as offensive line coach (2014-2016). Grubb followed DeBoer to his next stop at Fresno State University in 2017, rising from run game coordinator and offensive line coach, to assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach by 2021. That year, DeBoer moved north from California to the Pacific Northwest, taking over as head coach of the University of Washington. Grubb joined the Huskies' staff as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, retaining the position for two seasons.
American Football Monthly's NAIA National Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year (2008)
Before Grubb was the genius behind the University of Washington's high-powered offense, he was a rising assistant for the University of Sioux Falls. In addition to responsibilities as run game coordinator and offensive line coach, Grubb served as the school's strength and conditioning coach. The Cougars would capture their second NAIA championship in school history in 2008, as Grubb would take home American Football Monthly's NAIA Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year Award in 2008. The Cougars would capture their second-straight title in 2009.
The Seahawks hired Ryan Grubb to the be the team's next offensive coordinator on February 13, 2024. Grubb served as the offensive coordinator for the University of Washington from 2022-2024 where he led one of the top offenses in the nation to a National Championship game appearance.
