A Puget Sound native, Lawyer attended Lincoln High School in Tacoma and played college football at the University of Washington. As a safety, he was a second round pick in the 1996 NFL Draft by New England, and he played in Super Bowl XXXVI with the Patriots. He was also selected to the Pro Bowl four times. Lawyer finished his NFL career in Seattle (2009-2010).
